Friends of Rachel

Friends of Rachel (F.O.R.) is a Nathaniel Hawthorne Middle School student organization for grades 6-8 that exists to create a cultural change that inspires compassion and hope throughout our school.   By following the guidelines and ethics of "Rachel's Challenge" and the essays of Rachel Scott, F.O.R. supports and encourages students to start a chain reaction of kindness that will better our school and community.

"Rachel's Challenge" is a dynamic program based on the writings and life of 17 year-old Rachel Scott who was the first student killed at Columbine High School in 1999. Rachel left a legacy of reaching out and helping others, acting to combat bullying, and performing acts of kindness and compassion. Shortly before her death she wrote,

"I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go."
